Spearmint Tea Benefits: A Gentle Herbal Ally for Body and Mind
Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is one of those humble herbs that quietly earns its place in the garden and the teacup. With its soft, sweet scent and mild minty flavor, it is often the gentler counterpart to its sharper cousin, peppermint. At La Ferme A Ciel Sur Mer, we love spearmint not only for its bright green leaves and ease of growth, but also for its value in herbal tea blends that soothe and uplift. A little over five years ago I had begun my journey into entrepreneurship but I hadn't yet settled on medicinal herbs. I knew I wanted to do something in agriculture that had a foot strongly in stewardship of the land and regenerating soil. But the range of possibilities was so vast and about a year in I burned out. I was stressed about my lack of progress and the opportunity cost of working so hard at something that could possibly be a failure. One week in November I just couldn't get out of bed. I was meant to go see family and almost didn't make it because I couldn't buy a plane ticket. I did manage to get on a plane and fly across the country and on that trip I had the good fortune to go see a 'healer' of sorts. This was not someone who I've ever been back to but one among many recommendations was spearmint and peppermint tea three times a day. While I was making some other changes I credit this pattern with a recovery from my burnout and getting back on the path.
Why Spearmint?
Spearmint has a long history of traditional use as a digestive aid, a cooling herb for the summertime, and a remedy to calm tension and refresh the senses. Compared to peppermint, which contains more menthol, spearmint is milder and more approachable, especially for children or those who find peppermint too stimulating.
At our farm, we often include spearmint in our teas because it plays so well with others. It blends harmoniously with our chamomile, lemon balm, tulsi, nettle, and other gentle herbs, bringing a light sweetness and crisp aroma that lifts the mood and makes any infusion more pleasant to drink.

Top Benefits of Spearmint Tea
Supports Digestion
Spearmint tea has traditionally been used to ease gas, bloating, and indigestion. Its carminative properties can help relax the muscles of the digestive tract and gently stimulate healthy function.
Hormonal Balance for Women
Emerging studies suggest spearmint tea may help reduce excessive androgens in women with hormonal imbalances, such as PCOS. While more research is needed, many herbalists include spearmint in supportive blends for hormonal harmony.
Calms the Nervous System
The soft minty aroma of spearmint tea is instantly soothing. Sipping a warm cup at the end of the day can help ease tension and quiet a busy mind, especially when paired with nervines like tulsi or lemon balm.
Cooling and Refreshing
Spearmint is a naturally cooling herb, making it an excellent choice for iced teas and summer blends. It helps regulate body temperature and feels energizing without being overstimulating.
Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Properties
Spearmint contains rosmarinic acid and flavonoids that may offer antioxidant support. It also has mild antimicrobial properties, making it a good herb for general wellness.
How We Use Spearmint at La Ferme A Ciel Sur Mer
Spearmint is one of our favorite herbs to dry for tea. We harvest it fresh during its peak bloom, then dry it slowly at low temperatures to preserve its essential oils and vibrant flavor. It’s one of the staples in our tea blends for good reason.
In the garden, spearmint grows happily in full sun or part shade and helps deter pests, making it a favorite companion plant for brassicas and lettuces. It spreads easily, so we tend it carefully to avoid it taking over the beds.

Final Thoughts
Spearmint is a reminder that gentle doesn’t mean less powerful. In fact, the subtle sweetness of spearmint tea has a way of working quietly in the background to bring comfort, clarity, and ease. It’s the kind of herb we reach for often, whether to cool down on a hot day or to add a bright note to an evening brew.
If you’ve never tried spearmint tea on its own, we encourage you to steep a few dried leaves and notice the difference. It might just become your new favorite cup.
When I was looking for spearmint tea I found it much harder to source a high quality spearmint tea. Peppermint tea is much more common but spearmint tea is definitely worth trying.
