Scutellaria lateriflora
Certified Organic skullcap, grown outdoors on our farm in Charlevoix, Québec. We cut it once a season, when the plants stand about eighteen inches tall and the small hooded flowers are opening along the stems, then dry it low and slow and garble it by hand. A classic North American nervine, skullcap is the herb we reach for when tension is held in the body rather than spinning in the mind.
Why Our Skullcap
- Certified Organic, grown from seed in our own fields. Never wild-collected, never bought in and repacked.
- Cut once a season at peak bloom, when the aerial parts carry the most flower.
- Hand-garbled: we strip out the coarse stem, so what you get is leaf and flower rather than sticks and dust.
- Single species, one farm, one field. Skullcap is an herb where knowing exactly what is in the bag matters.
Good garbled skullcap should look green rather than brown, hold its shape rather than crumble to powder, and smell faintly grassy and sweet. Ours is grown in seasonal batches, and this year's harvest should carry us through to next summer's cut.
Key Uses
- As a simple hot infusion, on its own or blended with other calming herbs.
- In evening and bedtime tea blends, where it pairs naturally with chamomile, lemon balm, or milky oats.
- As the base for a home tincture, fresh or dried.
- In herbal formulation and small-batch manufacture, where garbled aerial parts are the usable form.
How to Use
Steep one to two teaspoons in freshly boiled water, covered, for eight to ten minutes. For preparation methods, blending, and what skullcap actually tastes like, see our guide to skullcap tea.
