Artemisia pontica
Certified Organic Roman wormwood, also called petite absinthe — the rarer cousin of grand wormwood and the traditional finishing herb in absinthe production. Grown and hand-harvested on our farm in Charlevoix, Québec, in small seasonal batches. Difficult to source in certified-Organic form anywhere, which is why distillers come to us.
Why Our Roman Wormwood
- 🌿 Certified Organic and grown in Québec — no sprays, no synthetic inputs, just regenerative farming on our Charlevoix farm.
- 🌱 Rare and hard to find — Artemisia pontica is rarely available in certified-Organic form; our small batches sell quickly each season.
- ✋ Hand-harvested at peak — cut at peak essential-oil concentration for full flavor and aromatic carry-through to the still.
- 📦 Fresh-dried and packaged on the farm — direct from our fields to your still room, with no commodity warehousing in between.
Look for: a fragrant, resinous scent and silvery-green appearance — these signal a fresh, properly dried batch.
Our Roman wormwood is grown in seasonal batches. Current stock is in and should carry us through to our next harvest in July.
Key Uses
- For absinthe colouring — used in the post-distillation infusion (the verte step), traditionally alongside hyssop and lemon balm, to extract the signature green hue along with finishing aromatics.
- For vermouth and herbal bitters — adds complexity and gentle bitterness in small quantities; complementary to grand wormwood rather than a substitute.
- As a finishing herb in spirits — its more delicate profile makes it useful where grand wormwood would overwhelm.
- Brewed sparingly in tea blends — bitter on its own; blends well with chamomile, peppermint, or lemon balm.
How to Use
For cultivation, the role of wormwood in absinthe-making, and how to source these herbs well, see our anchor guide: How to Grow Wormwood for Homemade Absinthe. A dedicated post on Roman wormwood is in development.
