Hyssopus officinalis

Certified Organic Hyssop, hand-harvested at peak flowering on our farm at La Ferme À Ciel Sur Mer in Charlevoix, Québec. One of the oldest documented medicinal herbs in continuous use, hyssop is bitter, minty, and reliably useful for respiratory and digestive preparations.

Why Our Hyssop

  • Certified Organic, grown on our farm in Quebec
  • Cold-hardy perennial that overwinters in our Charlevoix climate
  • Hand-harvested at peak essential oil concentration in midsummer
  • Dried at low heat to preserve the volatile aromatic compounds

Deep green leaves with intact blue-violet flowers, and a clean camphor-mint fragrance the moment you crush a sprig.

Key Uses

  • Daily tea: one teaspoon dried leaf per cup, steeped covered for 5–10 minutes
  • Honey infusion for a soothing winter syrup
  • Steam inhalation, added to hot water for aromatic steam
  • Culinary use in small amounts in syrups, baking, and savoury dishes
  • Blends well with peppermint, thyme, sage, and lemon balm

How to Use

Steep one teaspoon of dried hyssop in hot (not boiling) water for five to ten minutes, covered. For the full picture of hyssop's benefits and how each one works, see our guide to hyssop tea benefits. A Note on Safety

Hyssop tea is generally well tolerated by healthy adults at typical preparations. However, hyssop should be avoided entirely during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and in anyone with a seizure disorder. The plant's volatile oils contain pinocamphone, which can affect the central nervous system at concentrated doses. Hyssop essential oil should never be ingested. Speak with a healthcare provider before adding hyssop to your routine if you are taking anticonvulsant or other CNS medications.
