Organic Roman Wormwood (Artemisia pontica)

A Rare, Premium Herb for Traditional Absinthe and Herbal Crafting

Discover the rare ingredient that absinthe connoisseurs, herbalists, and mixologists around the world seek out: Organic Roman Wormwood (Artemisia pontica). Grown and hand-harvested on our certified organic farm in Charlevoix, Quรฉbec, this prized herb is best known for its essential role in absinthe recipesโ€”bringing depth, balance, and aroma that no other plant can replicate.

What Is Roman Wormwood?

Artemisia pontica, (also known as little absinthe, petite absinthe or Roman Wormwood), is a low-growing perennial herb native to Europe. Smaller and more delicate than its cousin Artemisia absinthium, Roman Wormwood carries a complex, slightly bitter flavor and a distinctive aromatic profileโ€”making it a defining ingredient in traditional absinthe formulas.

But its uses donโ€™t stop at spirits. Roman Wormwood has long been valued in folk medicine for digestive support and is sometimes included in tea blends or herbal bitters.

A Must-Have for Absinthe & Vermouth Makers

If you're making absinthe at home or professionally, Roman Wormwood is non-negotiable. Itโ€™s used in the final coloring stage of absinthe production, lending both flavor and its signature green hue.

Roman Wormwood also plays a supporting role in certain vermouth formulas and other herbal liqueurs, thanks to its complex bitterness.

  • โœ‹ Hand-Harvested with Care
We harvest at a plant's peak for potency and dry gently at low temperatures to preserve flavor and aromatics.

  • ๐ŸŒฑ Rare and Hard to Find
Artemisia pontica is difficult to grow and rarely available in organic formโ€”our small batches often sell out quickly.

  • ๐Ÿ“ฆ Fresh-Dried and Packaged On-Farm
100% grown and dried on our farm in Charlevoix, Quรฉbec. Direct from our fields to your still room or herbal cabinet.

How to Use

  • For Absinthe Making: Use during the coloring step (not distillation) to impart flavor, aroma, and the traditional green tint.

  • In Vermouth & Bitters: Add small amounts to bitter blends to balance sweetness and enhance herbal complexity.

  • As an Herbal Tea: Roman Wormwood is very bitterโ€”brew sparingly or blend with milder herbs like chamomile, peppermint, or lemon balm.
