Althaea officinalis
Certified Organic marshmallow root and aerial, hand-harvested on our farm at La Ferme À Ciel Sur Mer in Quebec. Our root is dug in the fall when the plant has pulled its energy down and mucilage content peaks; aerial leaves and flowers come off the plant in mid-summer. Both are dried at low heat to preserve the soothing botanical compounds that make this plant one of the most quietly powerful herbs in the materia medica.
🌿 Why Our Marshmallow
- Certified Organic, grown on our farm in Quebec
- Aerial harvested in summer; root dug in fall when mucilage peaks
- Root brushed clean, lightly rinsed, and dried at low heat to preserve mucilage
- Direct from farm to you — no warehousing, no months on a shelf
The quality is visible: pale ivory colour in the dried root, a clean fragrance, and an immediate mucilage draw the moment it meets cold water.
🌱 Key Benefits
- Soothes the throat and respiratory tissues
- Supports digestive comfort and gut lining
- Calms urinary tract irritation
- Versatile across cold infusions, syrups, glycerites, and topical preparations
Root or Aerial?
The root carries the highest mucilage concentration and is the classic choice for gut, throat, and demulcent preparations. The aerial parts (leaves and flowers) are gentler and milder, with a particular affinity for respiratory blends and a lovely pale colour in tea mixes. Many customers blend both. Use the variant selector above to choose.
How to Use
Cold infusion is the gold standard — heat diminishes the mucilage that makes marshmallow what it is. For full preparation methods, see our guide to marshmallow root tea; for the therapeutic application and gut-specific use, see our guide to marshmallow root for gut health.
Fresh Root, Seasonally
For glycerites, cold-process preparations, or working at scale, we offer fresh marshmallow root by pre-order each fall — minimum 3 kg, ships mid-September direct from the farm. For wholesale enquiries (5 kg or more), contact us directly.
